School Goal on Transitions : Grade 7 to 8
The Tamanawis Secondary School Planning Council, working
with two school committees, the Literacy Committee and the Social
Responsibility Committee, focuses its energy on two goals:
1. To improve the performance of Tamanawis students
in the area of literacy.
2. To bring greater awareness to our students in the
area of social responsibility and determine how to better transition the Grade Seven students into Grade Eight.
We will make time at the monthly Parental
Advisory Committee Meetings to give parents an update on our progress on these
two goals. We are proud to say that we have strong evidence that our
Tamanawis students are being positively affected by some of our
initiatives.
In the area of literacy, our students had the best
year when it came to scholarships and provincial examination
scores. We have introduced new strategies such as Cornell Notes, Lit
Circles and pre/post testing of literacy skills. We have received
grants to support our work in Energizers and in a Literacy program
where student teams will read and share with elementary aged
students. This year we are introducing a school wide writing day
where we will continue to identify and respond to literacy skills
which are underdeveloped in our youth.
In the area of social responsibility we saw more
students involved in positive activities such as leadership, fundraising,
community projects, and a real effort to make Tamanawis one
of the most peaceful schools in our community and in our province.
Our school received the recognition of "Most Outstanding School in
British Columbia" from BC School Sports as a testimonal to our work
in leadership, inclusiveness, volunteerism, and student/staff
participation.
